A gazebo that is not anchored is destined to fly into the neighbors’ yard. Unfortunately, this happens more than most people think and usually occurs on that one night of the year when the winds are actually strong. Fortunately, it is neither time nor cost prohibitive to properly anchor a gazebo.
Most people will only use a gazebo occasionally. As a result, most gazebos come with basic pegs that are useful if the gazebo is not frequently used. However, if the gazebo is in a windy environment, pegs are not enough. With gardens being so unique and variable, what works in one garden will not necessarily work in another. For example, a gazebo that is placed next to a fence and next to a hedge will require less anchoring than one that is placed in the middle of the garden with nothing to break the wind.
The easiest and most effective upgrade when it comes to anchoring a gazebo are ground anchors. Unscrew it and screw it into the soil or grass. Ground anchors are much more effective than the basic pegs that most vendors provide. For gazebos that are built over decking or patios where you can’t screw into the ground, weight bags that are placed on each leg are effective.
Guy ropes, which are commonly overlooked, can also be very helpful. By tying a rope from each corner of the roof to a ground anchor, the load is distributed away from the legs. This matters because the frame does not catch the wind first; it is the roof that does. A gazebo can have strong legs and still tip over if the roof is acting like a sail.
The wind also plays a part in how the frame of the gazebo is affected by the canopy material. A loose canopy acts like a sail in the wind, which increases the strain on the frame. Keeping the canopy taut will help prevent this. Keeping buckles and straps that connect the canopy to the frame taut will help prevent this.
Lastly, a gazebo that is set up in a corner of the garden that is enclosed by walls or fencing on two sides will always be more stable than one that is set up in the middle of the garden on an open lawn. This is not the case for most situations, and especially not the case for pop-up gazebos, but is something to consider before setting up a gazebo for a long period of time.
The material used in the frame affects the final choice too. Heavier steel naturally sits more stably, while a lighter frame of aluminum requires more anchoring to keep it stable. Aluminum frames are lighter, and thus easier to maneuver, while steel frames are heavier, and harder to move. Steel frames are naturally more stable, Aluminum frames require more anchoring to resist the wind. While each frame type has its positives and negatives, if you plan on building a gazebo, its good to know which frame type you have to determine the amount of stabilizing anchoring you need to install.
Weather forecasts are more accurate than most people realize. It is the strong, inconsistent winds that cause problems the most, and not a steady breeze. If the weather forecast shows that winds will be going above 30 mph, it is better to take down a pop up gazebo. If there is a permanent structure, you should also check each anchor point before the winds pick up.
People usually do not think about anchoring before a very bad weather warning. It is better to set up your gazebo properly on the first day. A gazebo that is properly anchored can have side panels and rain covers added and will be able to withstand weather that would take down a gazebo that uses stock anchoring.
We should also consider side panels because they impact wind resistance. Panels provide more shelter, but like sails on a boat, they provide more surface area for the wind to push against. If side panels are installed, it’s a good idea to provide extra anchors rather than using the same setup as an open-sided gazebo. For these setups, a good habit is to take the side panels off and put them back on as necessary to help protect the frame.
For a gazebo you want to stay put, side panels make it worth anchoring at the outset to save frustration in the long run.
